Bendigo is one of Australia’s grandest cities, built on one of the world’s richest goldfields. The regions winemaking industry is a legacy of its gold rush heritage. Discovery of gold in 1851 lead to an influx of gold prospectors. With the European miners came their love of wine and knowledge of winemaking. By the 1870’s their wines enjoyed an international reputation.
The phylloxera virus ended Bendigo’s wine industry in the 1890’s but resurgence in the 1980’s now has the region producing full-flavoured reds, big and bold in the North and spicy and elegant in the South.
During the day we will visit 4 to 5 of Bendigo’s finest wineries, which may include Balgownie Estate, Blackjack Vineyard, Big Hill Vineyard, Connor Park Winery, Chateau Dore, Chateau Leamon and Mandurang Valley.
